6 Interior Design Trends – Spotted at the Parade of Homes

I love to see what is happening with Interior Design Trends, and then apply it to the more budget conscious person, AKA me 🙂

All of these homes are stunning and often times over the top and very high end.

It is like walking through a real life Pinterest or Instagram feed, full of all the latest and greatest, curated trends in the world of home and interior design.

The Interior Design Trends that Caught my eye

1. Decorative Metals in Cabinets – #1

laundry room cabinets with checkered marble tile floors with metal

This was probably my favorite new trend I noticed. It is a great design element that you can use to dress your cabinets up.

Not only is it pretty but it also allows for breathing room, so is perfect for mudroom drawers or a cabinet that could use a little more ventilation. I noticed this most in laundry rooms and mudrooms.

DIY Ideas for Adding Decorative Metals

You can find decorative metal sheets at home improvements stores, amazon and specialty stores online. I love the idea of adding this in the place of a glass accent. And If you go with a tighter pattern, the contents inside will be pretty hidden.

This grill mesh also looks like a great and more affordable option if you need larger quantities. Click to Shop.

Bong with Wild Hearts Homes just did this in her home office built ins. She used chicken wire and spray painted it gold to save on cost and it looks amazing. You can check her project out here!!

2. Decorative Glass – #2

While I didn’t see this is in every home, it was a trend that I absolutely loved. Seen in cabinet fronts and doors, decorative glass adds a vintage touch of character to an otherwise new home. The house I saw this in the most was, inevitably, my favorite.

You can apply removable film to plain glass to add a decorative look. There are a lot of pretty options on Etsy and Amazon.

This lattice film will create a similar look as my inspo pictures above.

If you want to explore your options, Lauren of Blesser House did a whole roundup on window film here.

3. All things Ornate – #3

Gone are the days of only the sleek look of simple, straight lines. I still love simple and I don’t think its leaving, but I do think mixing the simple with some more intricate and ornate elements is the direction we are headed.

I noticed this most in railings, wood trim, framing built ins, beds, cubbies, etc. with a cute design instead of just straight lines. I also saw it in the kitchen on countertop edges and oversized hood ranges.

DIY Ornate Details

This one is pretty self explanatory, but try to add some more ornate details into your designs.

Curves instead of sharp lines, or even trim work with a design as seen above. Mix and match simple and ornate. If its a little scary, start with a piece of furniture or something that is not a permanent fixture in your home.

I did this on my IKEA Malm nighstand hack by adding the quarter circles to the shaker detail. A very simple addition for a totally different look.

4. Oversized Vent Hoods – #4

Speaking of Hoods, they just keep getting bigger and better. The oversized hood trend is not a new one, but now we are seeing them come to the countertop with shelving on the inside edge for all of your cooking essentials.

If you happen to be in the market for a new hood… the bigger, the better. And those shelves that come down the side are just so convenient to store your most used cooking items.

5. Color and Pattern – #5

This one isn’t new but is still worth mentioning as we continue to move from mostly neutrals to more color and pattern.

In most of the homes I visited, the main living areas were still very neutral. But there was a lot of color and fun patterns in more isolated spaces such as mudrooms, laundry rooms, bathrooms, bedrooms, etc.

I think most DIYers have this one down pretty good, but I will say it is definitely not the safer option.

When you are learning as you go and don’t have an interior design background, its a bit harder to match multiple patterns and colors. I personally have liked to keep color in contained rooms and not in the open, main areas of the house. Colorful cabinets, built ins and wallpaper are so fun. I also have had really good luck pulling colors from patterns I know I am using in the room, such as rugs or wallpaper.

6. Focus on the Ceiling – #6

Ceilings with woodwork accents or wallpaper are such a fun trend that was not lacking in the parade of home this year. I also noticed, and loved, a lot of accent trim work that was carried up the wall, across the ceiling, and then back down the wall. This was seen a lot in theater rooms.

Try replacing the “accent wall” with the “accent ceiling”…and we will all end up with really strong arms and shoulders!

I have never installed wallpaper on a ceiling and I am not sure I really ever want to, but man it sure is pretty!
